In The European Tribe, Caryl Phillips chronicles a journey through modern-day Europe, his quest guided by a moral compass rather than a map. Seeking personal definition within the parameters of growing up black in Europe, he discovers that the natural loneliness and confusion inherent in long journeys collide with the bigotry of the "European Tribe"—a global community of whites caught up in an unyielding, Eurocentric history. Phillips illustrates the scenes and characters he encounters, in places like poverty-stricken Casablanca, racy Costa del Sol, and peaceful Provence, where he muses with writer James Baldwin over dinner about the state of the human spirit. He explores Venice through the Shakespearean outcast Othello and views Amsterdam through the eyes of young Anne Frank. Source writers web-site

Seven years ago I made my first trip to Europe with much disappointment and elation. This book symbolized my experience for almost a year in Europe.

This is the music of my father youth and I have a feeling it’s the reason I am here.
I was late for school so many mornings because of Salt and Pepa, I just couldn’t bring myself to remove the needle from the record. Growing up in the suburbs, I was transform to NYC. I wanted the stonewashed fitted jeans, rope chain and ghetto gold earrings. I still want the earrings and I was tempted a few months ago to buy some 14k while looking for a gift for my mom.

Yo Majesty is a mixture of electro, low-fi soul and southern hip-hop. The trio consist of Shon B. Shunda K. and Jwl B. The group is a contrast to the 106 and Park crowd and although much as been made of the groups sexuality, the music still remains the driving forth.

Common Cloth fall 2007 collection. While back in Toronto a few months ago, I was in the Queen west area and had the opportunity to talk to one of the sisters from Common cloth. The store as a contemporary flare but still manage to maintain a cosy atmosphere.

Two weeks before this year's G-8 meeting, a wide range of projects, initiatives and protagonists from the fields of art, culture and political activism are going to gather in Berlin for "SUMMIT non- aligned initiatives in education culture." SUMMIT is a forum for questioning and changing some of the fundamental terms of the debate around education, knowledge production and information society.

Beyond the widespread lament about the crisis in education, there are numerous initiatives converging around "education." Recognizing that education is equally a platform for cultural actualization and self organization, these initiatives range from free academies and exhibitions as educational modes to ad-hoc initiatives within social, political and cultural organizations. Parallel to these developments, many initiatives are taking place within or at the margins of institutions that work against the grain of their official modes and expand, rather than defy, existing aims.
